Privacy Policy

Who we are

This is the personal website of Matthew Fowler. This site is not a business and does not carry advertising.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Except as described below, this website does not collect personal data apart from standard server-access logs (which tells us the IP address making each request and the details of that request).

Comments

Submission of comments from visitors is not enabled on this website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We perform first-party analytics. We do not use any third-party aggregating analytics services (such as Google Analytics), nor any advertising services.

Who we share your data with

We don’t, excepting that some features of the third-party Jetpack service are used (such as their content-delivery network and security tools) which may cause your IP address and details of content they are serving on our behalf to be shared with them. Jetpack also enables a fall-back mobile-view version of this site and a third-party cookie (owned by Jetpack) may be set to track if mobile-device users choose to use that option. We do not regard the information shared with Jetpack as being Personally-Identifying, and it is necessary for the functioning of this website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

User accounts are not offered to the general public, only to specific identified persons. All data related to attempts to log in to the “back end” of this website (including originating IP address, username and password used), or any data gathered relating to any unlawful activity, may be shared with any third-party (including, but not limited to, Automattic Jetpack) for security and related purposes.

Where we send your data

For visitors, except as identified above (or any other reason required by law), your data is not sent to any third parties. Site visitors are not offered any opportunities to enter personal information.
